On July 12, 2008, at a bluegrass musicians' picking party, North By Northeast was born. Some of New England's finest bluegrass musicians, all long-time friends and admirers of each other's talent, were ready for a new bluegrass experience.

• Stacy Phillips: Grammy-winning dobro player and renowned fiddler.

• Phil Zimmerman: lead singer and mandolinist with the former Traver Hollow, then Connecticut's premier traditional bluegrass band.

• Dave Howard: talented multi-instrumentalist and singer, crossing the spectrum from old time to bluegrass.
  

• Bruce Stockwell: winner of the prestigious Merlefest Banjo Competition, and long-time member of Vermont-based The Stockwell Brothers.

• Kelly Stockwell: a fresh face in bluegrass bass and delighted to be in a band with husband Bruce.

Picking together that day, they realized the time is right. It was a true bluegrass "Let's make a band" moment.
